2008 Tour de Palm Springs 100 Mile Ride
The event was the Tour de Palm Springs 100 Mile Ride. There were also 55, 25, 10, and 5 mile options. The day could not have been better with it being in the mid 70's all day with minimal wind. This was my first go at an organized century ride and it went well. The most memorable thing about this ride was the start in down town Palm Springs. There must have been a few thousand riders waiting to start. I had never seen that many cyclists in one place. The route for the 100 mile ride took you out towards Desert Hot Springs and the big windmills where you get to SAG #1 at mile 16. Then it is a fast down hill ride to SAG #2 and finally to SAG #3 at mile 52. I was feeling good to that point but needed to eat something more than gels so I had a sandwich. Then it was on to SAG #4 at mile 72. At this point riders really got spread out and there were lots of traffic signals from about mile 85 on to the finish in down town Palm Springs. In all the ride went smooth for me, no flats or mechanical issues. I kind of took my time at a few of the SAG stops to socialize. In all my finish time was a bit over seven hours. After I felt great and felt like I could have went for a run. That's about it on this one. I will absolutely do this ride again next year.
